Met-allic Costume Institute Gala, 2012  in New York City

On a night when fashion's finest come out to play, there are always a few misses.
Unfortunately, Beyonce Knowles didn't make the grand red carpet return she expected after giving birth to daughter Blue Ivy Carter in January.
The 30-year-old entertainer's figure looked lovely, but her Givenchy Haute Couture gown was a sequinned, feathered disaster.
In fact, the purple and black feathered train looked like it might have been constructed for her bathroom carpet.
B isn't the belle of the ball: Beyonce fails to impress in this hot mess of a dress at the 2012 Met Ball
Back view: Beyonce's dress left very little to the imagination from behind
Train of thought: What was the 30-year-old singer thinking?
Snapping up attention: Rihanna wore a crocodile Tom Ford dress to tonight's Met Ball in New York City

Rihanna is not one to shy away from making a bold fashion statement.
The 24-year-old singer confidently wore a tight, crocodile applique gown to tonight's Met Ball in New York City.
The Bajan beauty didn't even have to channel single 'Talk That Talk' at the annual fashion event, as her sultry gaze said everything.

She made sure to show off her toned rear in the slinky Tom Ford number as she strutted down the red carpet in a pair of somewhat sedate black heels.
While she kept her make-up and jewellery to a minimum, her hairdo at the Costume Institute Gala was over the top.
Her mane was tied in two bunches atop her head, which was most likely meant to look artful, but in execution just looked strange.
Her talon-like fingernails, also painted black, added to the vampy look she seemed to be going for at the fete, which celebrated the Modern Museum of Art's Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations exhibition opening.
Belle of the ball: Beyonce's sister Solange was a little more conventional in her canary yellow gown

Gold goddesses : Carey Mulligan in Prada, Jessica Alba in Michael Kors and Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney at the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of
I see London, I see France: Heidi Klum shows off her leg (but no pants) in blue Escada
Project Runway host Heidi Klum also might want to find herself a new designer come 2013.
Her blue lace Escada showed off her endlessly long legs, but its mini dress meets maxi vibe didn't quite work.
Sex and the City's resident fashionista, Sarah Jessica Parker, looked lovely, but her floral Valentino would have looked more in place at a garden party.
Midas touch: Victoria's Secret model Karolina Kurkova opted for a show-stopping look, designed by Rachel Zoe
Gwyneth Paltrow had no problems, paying tribute to tonight's hostess Muccia in a stunning short and backless lilac-silver dress that was probably the most elegant outfit on the red carpet tonight.
Sparkle seems to work best when given a slant, like Gwyneth's Barbarella minimalism or Sofia Vergara's sensational Marchesa silver lace column dress.
The colour is so subtle it allows the drama of the lace and the sexy shape of the gown to really do the talking, and the Modern Family star finished off her look with a bright, bright slick of fuchsia pink lipstick... which sealed the deal.
Frock star: Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev wore a black and gold confection by legendary New York designer Donna Karen

Lana Del Rey in Joseph Altuzarra and Gwyneth Paltrow in an incredibly sexy and fresh Prada dress
Quirky: Christina Ricci  one-offs in her Thakoon and Valentino gowns, but she paled next to the refined glamour of other gala goers

Silver siren: Sofia Vergara in Marchesa model Anja Rubik failed to wear hits#
