Ready to share  Weird MC hidden story
Popular female rapper, Weird MC speaks with MAUREEN AZUH on her recent exploits

The Nigerian music scene is one that hardly has a dull moment. Every now and then, artistes thrill their fans with one single or an album. For some, it is a yearly affair.

But for Nigeria’s ‘Rappatainer’, Weird MC, producing a good album takes quality time. Since 2006, when she released her second album, After Da Storm with the hit track, Ijoya, Weird MC has perfected the art of whetting her fans’ appetites – often taking her time – before giving the next big surprise. That, however, goes beyond releasing musical albums.

Weird MC, whose real name is Sola Idowu, is at present flexing her intellectual muscles on writing a book. She says apart from the fact that she enjoys doing things that are challenging, she hopes to share some aspect of her life’s story with Nigerians.

“I feel there are things I have not shared with Nigerians. It wasn’t easy for me as a female artiste to be accepted. There was always a double standard in the business. It has always been harder for women. These are things I want to share – the pitfalls and the coming of age, that transition and everything else about my music career I’m sharing with people. I am also working on a movie; I’m writing a script which reflects the struggle of a woman in a way,” she says.

Since releasing her last single, ‘Jehovah’ in 2010, the rapper, songwriter and producer has seemingly been off the scene. But as she says, staying off the scene does not mean not working.

“I have been working. Some of us rush our albums while some of us take our time to cook it properly. In my opinion if I did not take time with Ijoya, it would not have been that popular. I was thinking it was going to be a regular song but it has turned out to be timeless. And I didn’t know it will be as popular as that maybe it’s the sound but it has sort of outlived its time. It’s a song I took my time to work on properly. I am currently working on an album; I have two more songs to go,” she says.

She adds that like Ijoya, a fusion of sounds, the new album, as much as she wants it to stand out, will also have fusion of sounds such as the konga and hip hop. Ironically, Weird MC does not play musical instruments but depends on ideas, which she stores in her phone and later programmes or translates them to suit her need for sounds.

She says, “A lot of people have said they are not able to identify a particular sound with the Weird MC brand. I think it was Femi Kuti, who told me I have succeeded in creating my own sound, which is very difficult to do in these times. That is reflected in my new album. You will hear the Afrobeat, Konga, the Hip Hop sound and you will hear different voices too. You will hear Weird mc, Sasha and Mocheddah. I have got different people and different kind of energy on the album.”

Weird MC explains that her choice of Sasha and Mocheddah – who are also top female rappers in the industry – is to break a jinx and show people that women can work together without conflict.

However, as much as she has been working on an album and writing a book, she is at the verge of completing her first international deal, which will complement her deal in Nigeria with Funke Kuti as her manager. She has also spared some time for humanitarian work. She was recently appointed United Nations youth and peace ambassador alongside Sound Sultan and Goldie. The appointment came on the heels of her serving as a celebrity Road Safety Marshall and a goodwill ambassador for a non-governmental organisation “to work with women who suffer domestic abuse”.

The obviously elated rapper shares her UN appointment story, “I was in Abuja at the time, recording. I think one of them got to know I was in Abuja. They had been following my work, and they approached me. Before I knew it a week later that there was a proper ceremony for me. I was given my plague and certificate. I also have my United Nation’s Identity card. We will be going to Brazil later this month for a conference. It’s going to be my first assignment and I am looking forward to it,” she says.
