Oprah Winfrey Angers Step-Mother By Buying Father's Barber Shop

American chat show queen Oprah Winfrey has found herself embroiled in a family feud after purchasing her father Vernon’s barbershop out of foreclosure, a decision which has not gone down well with her step-mother Barbara.

The media mogul bought the hair salon in Nashville, Tennessee, which her dad Vernon has run for 50 years in an auction on Friday after the couple were unable to pay back the bank on the property and faced losing the business' new building.

However, Vernon’s wife Barbara, who bought the new building a year ago, as well as refurbishing it and moving the business into it, is less than happy with the new owner.

The 78-year-old, who filed divorce papers against Vernon earlier this week, claims that Oprah has used her fortune to take control of the barber shop, and has stressed that she would have been able to pay off the store’s debts herself.

Speaking to Fox News, she said:

"I know what is going on. I'm tired of it, and I've had enough. There is no reason for it to go into foreclosure like this. The property is upside down, which is what a lot of properties are. It cost us $481,000 to build this building, but it's only worth $350,000."

She also claimed that 80-year-old Vernon is taking bad advice from people, without naming her step-daughter Oprah.

"People are giving him wrong advice, and it's leaving me in a situation where all I can do is fight for me. He believes what he's told. His daughter doesn't care about the community. His daughter doesn't care about the barbershop. But I do."

However, Vernon defended his decision to allow his billionaire daughter to buy his property, insisting,

"My wife and I, we have not been getting along well, and I did not want to endow myself to another drawn-out, struggling debt."
